Lin Chung-Guang (Baritone)

Baritone Lin Chung-Guang is one of the most famous young professional singers in Taiwan. He is talented, passionate, and remains focused in his singing career. He often works with many professional orchestras in Taiwan, such as National Symphony Orchestra, National Taiwan Symphony Orchestra, Taipei City Symphony Orchestral and Taipei Chamber Orchestral, etc. Professor Thomas Grubb, coaching staff in New York City Opera and Faculties of The Juilliard School and the Peabody Institute of Music, has on several occasions coached Mr. Lin, and has witnessed how Mr. Lin’s professionalism has been improved and made the following comment: “Lin Chung-Guang has been coaching with me since 1996. In that time, he has grown into a musician of professional calibre and a true artist. His thoroughness of preparation and his seriousness of purpose and application are a joy to behold, while happily he has not lost any of his imagination or creative impulse. I am truly proud to have participated in some way in Lin's progress over the years and I sincerely congratulate him for it.”

Mr. Lin has performed several full opera roles, including Figaro and Don Bartolo from Il Barbiere di Siviglia, Germont and Marquis from La Traviata, Marcello and Schaunard from La Bohème, Eisenstein from Die Fledermaus, Papageno from Die Zauberflote, Don Alfonso from Cosi fan tutte, Rocco from Fidelio, King Fu-Tsai from Chinese opera Xshi-shi, Marullo from Rigoletto, Sciarrone from Tosca, Steumann from Triatan und Isold, and Ben from Telephone.

Mr. Lin has been giving solo Recitals at least once every year. He has also been frequently invited to perform solo programs in many Oratorios such as Bach's Christmas Oratorio, Beethoven's Chorale Fantasia, C Minor Mass, Symphony, No. 9, Britten’s War Requiem, Chang's War Poetry and two Chinese cantatas, Faure's Requiem, Handel's Messiah, Haydn's The Creation, Mozart's Requiem, Purcell's Exultate Jubilate, Schönberg’s Ode to Napoleon Buonaparte, etc.

The awards he has received include: First Place at the Voice Competition of Nantou, Taiwan, 1995; First Place at the Music Competition of Taiwan, 1996 and he represented Taiwan at the Voice Competition of Asia, 1996; the Taipei Young Musician Award in 1997; a full Scholarship from the Vocal Institute of UCSA, and a Rotary Education Foundation Scholarship in 1997 and 1998; “Young Singer of the Year” distinction from National Symphony Orchestral in 2000; and Young Singer Award from Chinese Vocalist Society in 2001.

He is currently teaching in the Music Department of National Taichung Education University, as well as Tung-hai University. He also teaches in the Taipei Chamber Singers and the Chinyun Chorus. Mr. Lin is a member of the "Association of Vocal Artists of the Republic of China." In the past years, he has also been invited to perform in many Art Song, Opera, Opera Gala, Oratorio, Folk song and Musicale concerts from Belgium, Austria, New Zealand and Taiwan.

In addition, Mr. Lin started his opera directing career since 2006. He was the assist-director of Don Giovanni in 2006, as well as in Idomeneo in 2007. He also directed Gianni Scchicchi and Madame Butterfly (Act II) in 2008; Telephone, selections of Così fan tutte and West Side Story in 2010. He is currently producing and directing Die Zauberflöte and La Bohème in Taiwan this year.
