The Italian soprano Lilia Carpinelli is currently based in New Zealand. Following the completion of her music degree at the Salerno Conservatory, Italy, in 2001 at the age of 21, she studied the ‘Estill Voice Training System’ with Elisa Turlà. A highlight during this period was to be invited to participate in master-classes with the famous Italian singers Luciana Serra and Bruno De Simone. In 2000 Lilia won two First Prizes in the ‘Giannina Arangi Lombardi’ competition in Naples and in the ‘Citta’ di Mercato Severino’ competition in Salerno. The following year she was awarded the First Prize in the ‘Idelmo Poggioli’ competition in Naples. Ms Carpinelli has sung a great variety of styles and genres. Her operatic roles include Eleonora in Salieri’s Prima la musica poi le parole in Vienna with the Orchestra Giovanile di Roma, conducted by Luigi De Filippi, Lulù in Raffaele Viviani’s Eden Teatro, with the Trianon Orchestra conducted by Renato Piemontese, at the Trianon Theatre, Naples, as well as O Nino in Manuel de Falla’s El retablo de maese Pedro, at the Augusteo Theatre, Salerno. Other 18th century opera roles were Dirindina in Scarlatti’s La Dirindina, with the Nuova Orchestra Scarlatti, at the Garibaldi Theatre, Caserta and the role of Dorilla in Hasse’s La Serva Scaltra, with the Labirinto Ensemble conducted by Mariano Patti at the Cilea Theatre, Naples. Lilia Carpinelli feels passionately about the arts playing a central role in uniting people and a unique project was a concert tour to Israel and Palestine with the Nuova Orchestra Scarlatti in 2005. She also performed for the Inauguration of the Olympics Beijing, China in 2005 with the same orchestra and sung with the Orchestra Giovanile di Roma in Austria. She can be heard regularly in recital with the pianist Matteo Napoli in both, Italy and New Zealand. Her most recent engagements inlcuded the solos in Rossini’s Petit Messe Solennelle and Vivaldi’s Gloria with the Auckland Choral Society in Napier and Auckland and in March 09 she featured prominently in a programme entitled ‘Vienna Nights’ with the Manukau Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Uwe Grodd. In addition to her performance career, Lilia is a dedicated and passionate teacher. She was the vocal coach, as well as teaching the Orff Method, at the Mozarteum and Orff academies in Salerno, Italy for more than five years. Since arriving in New Zealand in early 2008, Lilia has already introduced Orff Methodology tuition to many children at schools and made a considerable impact on both music performance and education in Northland.
